    Cervical spondylosis

The bones (vertebrae) of our spine are softened by the intervertebral discs, which act like shock absorbers to minimize the effects of movement on the spine. The disc consists of an outer tough ring and an inner soft jelly-like substance. Cervical spondylosis is a collective term for age-related wear and tear of the intervertebral discs. As the intervertebral discs dehydrate and shrink, signs of osteoarthritis develop, including bony prominences along the bony edges (bone spurs or osteophytes). This abnormal growth can cause narrowing of the inside of the spine or the hole from which the spinal nerves emerge, a related condition called cervical spinal stenosis.

CAUSE

Dehydrated Discs - By the age of 40, the discs begin to dry out and contract, allowing for greater bone-to-bone contact between the vertebrae, causing the above symptoms.

disc prolapse-

Bone spurs - Disc degeneration causes the spine to produce extra bone to strengthen the spine. Stiff Ligaments - Spinal ligaments can harden with age, making the neck less flexible.

Excessive use or regular heavy lifting can wear out the spine

RISK FACTOR

  • Aging
  • Neck injury
  • Bad posture
  • People with certain occupations or certain activities such as gymnasts or athletes
  • Genetic factors
  • Smoke

SYMPTOMS

  • Neck stiffness and pain
  • Headache that comes from the neck
  • Pain in the shoulder or arm
  • Limited neck movement
  • Grinding sound or sensation when turning the neck

CONDITION

When cervical spondylosis puts pressure on the spinal cord called cervical stenosis, it can put pressure on the spinal cord, a condition called cervical myelopathy.

  • Numbness, tingling, and/or weakness in your hands, arms, legs, or feet
  • Lack of coordination and difficulty walking
  • Abnormal reflex
  • Muscle spasm
  • Loss of bowel and bladder control

Another possible complication of cervical spondylosis is cervical radiculopathy, in which a bone spur presses on a nerve as it exits the spine. Pain in one or both hands is the most common symptom.
